Reliable Resistance Piering Services for Businesses in the Atlanta, GA, Area
Resistance piering is a foundation stabilization method in which push piers (large beams made of concrete or steel) are driven into the soil around the base of a structure’s foundation. While helical piering uses large screw-like piers that gain traction by biting into surrounding soil structures, resistance piers are driven all the way down to the bedrock and use the resistance created by this underlying substrate to stabilize the foundation. As such, resistance piering is typically used in situations where the bedrock is closer to the ground surface and easier to reach. Conversely, helical piering is the preferred method of foundation stabilization in cases where the bedrock is much further below the surface and traction must be gained from surrounding soil rather than from a sturdy substrate.
How Resistance Piering Works
The number of piers used to stabilize a foundation will depend on many factors, such as the weight of the structure, the size of the foundation, the extent of the sinking or settling, and the condition of the surrounding soil structures. During the resistance piering process, holes are first dug at predetermined locations around the foundation. These holes are either dug by hand or using machinery, depending on how many holes are needed and whether or not the foundation can be easily accessed. Once the holes are dug, exposing the foundation’s footing, brackets are attached to the footing and a hydraulic drive motor is used to push the piers through the bracket and into the ground. This process is repeated until a solid substrate is reached.
