How Soil Nailing Works
Building a soil nail wall is a relatively straightforward process, however, it requires great precision to ensure lasting stability. It also requires specialized machinery to drill holes into the excavated soil or hillside wall that requires stabilization. After the holes are drilled—typically three to six feet deep depending on the condition of the soil and other factors—the “nails” are inserted. These “nails” are large, tension-resisting sinews made of stainless steel. They are installed into the holes along with a fluid-like grout mixture that solidifies to hold the sinews firmly in place. Once all of the metal supports are installed into the wall, a layer of shotcrete is applied over the face to give the retaining wall a finished appearance.
